As Christians, we are called to be the peculiar people, experiencing the divine power of God. Sadly, many of us rely on the world to provide our needs instead of relying on the One who provides all our needs. If we truly believe that our God is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient, wouldn’t we live our lives differently than the rest of the world? So why are our lives not so different? Our education, our career, and even our lifestyle are not distinguishable from other beliefs or ideas. I must say it is all because our true purpose of life is painted over by worldly worries and desires. We, who are called to follow Christ, became restless in unavoidable debts and uncontrollable desires to get more and more materialistic things. Unfortunately, due to the way we live now, the “ideal” ministry seems too great of a sacrifice – asking the impossible. Are we content working majority of our lives and spending just few hours a week in ministry? Is this what God had planned for us? Don’t you think there is something more to a Christian life?
After my conversion experience, I did not want to live a life trapped in the endless cycle of “working and spending”. I wanted to live a life of purpose. I wanted to spread the gospel so that Jesus would come soon. So I made some decisions that our society calls radical and unreasonable.
The common experience many friends my age reference, “the college lifestyle” is very foreign to me since I have never gone to college. My last accredited education (An education approved by the government standard) was a high school education. After high school, I have made a choice to follow God where ever He will lead me. Even if following God meant giving up what I had envisioned for my future career, I trusted that He knew what was best for my future. The bible says He declares the end from the beginning. (Isaiah 46:10) So when I prayed, “Father, lead me to where you want me to be” I claimed that promise. God heard my prayer and answered it according to His will. His response had been for me to choose an unknown path of working at a ministry I’ve never even seen or heard before. But I made a choice to risk my future by going against the rational path of getting to a college degree.
I am a 1.5 generation Korean-American. Coming from a culture that highly values prestigious education. So choosing not to go to a college is insane. Not only is it hard to convince yourself that everything is going to be okay, but trying to convince Korean parents, who immigrated to provide a better life opportunities, which is traditionally secured by advancing in the higher education, is another challenge. Even for myself, I wasn’t too sure how things will play out for my future so I had no better argument to my parents except, “God knows what is best”. How God has shown me this was the way is a story for another time but I was able to move forward in faith because I knew 110% that this was His own leading. Surely, He made it clear for me to trust Him against all odds.
It has been almost 6 years since that time. Through many heartaches and discrimination from my own family, I continued in my decision to follow God. I can’t say it was easy but looking back to how God led me, I still stand stronger than ever for the same purpose to live for God and go wherever He wants me to go. During those years, not only did He perform miracles to change my character but He also led me to the education of various practical life skills that I would have never imagined to learn. To name a few: furniture carpentry, leadership skills, project management, video editing, broadcasting, studio recording, entrepreneurship, etc. Now with all these skills, I am a freelancing graphic designer trying to establish a design/business company. It is quite amazing, I must say, and all glory goes to God! He can bless abundantly when we choose to follow Him.
So with the invaluable, innumerable experiences, I have a dream to help you, a Christian, who wants to live the ultimate life of freedom in Christ. I wish to share with you some of life enhancing ways and tools to help you to become your own boss. Not being tied to a salary but eventually having the flexibility to do what you were called to do: ministry. It has been clear to me that God does not want any of His children to struggle just to survive, but rather wants us to become the people of an influence. He is wanting someone who can be an example living out God’s principles, proving to the world that His ways are the best. I believe God has taught me what TRUE education is so that I can share my experience of what it means to be “self-supporting“.
Please don’t think that I have all the answers and my ways are superior. Neither am I saying that everyone needs to live exactly as how I lived. I am in no position to tell you what God has planned for your future. However, it is my desire to help you in your faith’s journey to trust God who does have the best solutions for all life’s problems – not only theologically, but also practically. So I am starting this blog to provide the best resources that I’ve found from my personal experiences so we can live the abundant and fulfilling life in accordance to help finish God’s work. I hope you will be willing to take a step forward in faith to an amazing adventure that God has planned out for you.
